The garden’s vibrant display of tulips, against the backdrop of Kashmir’s natural beauty, makes it a must-visit destination for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking a unique experience.

In this blog, we’ll take you on a journey through Kashmir’s famous Tulip Garden, exploring its history, the beauty of its seasonal bloom, and everything you need to know about planning a visit.

A Brief History of Kashmir’s Tulip Garden

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, previously known as Siraj Bagh, was inaugurated in 2007 by then Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad. The garden was established with the aim of boosting tourism in the region, particularly by attracting visitors during the spring season when the valley is bathed in vibrant colors. Spread over 30 hectares (around 74 acres), the garden sits on a gentle slope, allowing visitors to walk through its terraces and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The idea behind creating the garden was to showcase a variety of tulips, which are native to Central Asia and Europe but thrive in Kashmir’s cool climate. Since its inception, the garden has grown to include more than 1.5 million tulip bulbs, covering around 70 different varieties. Every year, new varieties are added to enhance the garden’s appeal, making it an ever-changing tapestry of colors and patterns.
